What actually matters
Airflow styling vs hot barrels
Air stylers wrap hair around a barrel with moving air at a lower temperature than a curling iron's metal surface. Results last less long on some hair types, but heat exposure is lower.
Auto-curl and attachments
Self-wrapping barrels save a lot of practice. Count the attachments you will actually use: a smoothing brush and one curl size cover most people.
Drying power
A multi-styler is also your dryer. Check that it has a proper pre-styling dryer attachment if you have thick hair.
Weight in the hand
You hold it above your head; a light, well-balanced body makes a big difference over a full style.

FAQ
Do air stylers damage hair less than curling irons?
They usually style at a lower temperature than a hot barrel, which reduces heat exposure. Hair can still be damaged by overuse and high settings.
Will an Airwrap work on fine or very thick hair?
Both can work, but fine hair may need a setting spray to hold curls, and thick hair takes longer to pre-dry. Dyson sells versions with attachments for straight/wavy and curly/coily hair.
