Nail and foot care devices: electric nail files and callus removers

Electric nail files shape and buff nails with small rotating bits; electric callus removers use a spinning roller to smooth hard skin on the heels. Both do the work of a file in a fraction of the time, as long as you go gently.

What actually matters

Speed control

Several speeds, and forward and reverse rotation, let you work slowly on natural nails and faster on hard skin or gel.

Attachments

Look for a range of bits or rollers (coarse to fine) and check that replacements are easy to buy.

Wet or dry use

Waterproof callus removers can be used in the shower; others need dry skin. The maker's instructions say which.

Hygiene

Bits and rollers should come off for cleaning. Do not share them, and do not use the device on broken skin.

FAQ

Are electric nail files safe on natural nails?

Yes, on a low speed with a fine bit and light pressure. Too much speed or pressure in one spot heats and thins the nail.

Should people with diabetes use a callus remover?

Ask a doctor or podiatrist first. Reduced feeling in the feet makes it easy to remove too much skin, and small wounds heal slowly.
